Art. Your Art Calendar for 2018 – Cultural and Art Events

So, here we are, 2018 has come and most of us are planning this year ahead and what the best art events. For those who are art addicts, Travel.Art.Stories prepare you for this year, and collected for you some great, and not always popular art events, or cultural events to visit this year. First, I would like to suggest you one ‘must visit’ event for each month, and then I will add Art Calendar for each month. Just quick overview as I want to include the whole list of art and cultural events this year.

January Art Events

Valletta, Malta — Cultural Capital of Europe Opening Ceremonies

This is one of the largest and most significant events in the world; this is like cultural Olympic Games. This January, the best way to start your art adventure is to attend the Opening Ceremonies of the biggest event in Europe. This event is already started, but you still have few days to enjoy it!

Brussels, Belgium – Brafa Art Fair

The Brafa Art Fair, created in 1956, is one of the most prestigious art fairs in Europe, which combines all genres of art from antiques to contemporary art. Located in a luxurious venue, Tour & Taxis, that represents a part of Brussels industrial heritage.

Tokyo, Japan – ART in PARK HOTEL TOKYO 2018 (AiPHT)

March 9 – 11, 2018

As I am searching for some ‘not mainstream’ art and cultural events all over the worlds, this event immediately catches my eye. Art in the Park Hotel Tokyo is a kind of art exhibition happening in the hotel. An extraordinary venue for an art event, isn’t it? So, you literally visit hotel rooms and look at the art masterpieces.

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Van Gogh & Japan, Van Gogh Museum

23 March 2018 – 24 June 2018

Do you know what inspired Van Gogh for his innovative approaches in painting? I found this exhibition interesting, as it will show you how Japanese art influenced one of the most recognizable artists in the world.

“I envy the Japanese the extreme clarity that everything in their work has.” (letter to Theo van Gogh, september 1888).

During this exhibition, you will see his major Japanese cartoons inspiration.

Vienna, Austria – Vienna Festival 2018

May 11–June 17

This festival is not something you used to see in Vienna. Imagine you will see another side of Vienna. Contemporary, alternative, and innovative. About five weeks, you will observe contemporary stage art of 44 performances from 28 countries, including music, theater, dance, and other art performances. Last year you could see Jude Law! What surprises they will have this year, who knows.

London, United Kingdom – Frida Kahlo’s Wardrobe exhibition, V&A Museum

6th June – 4th November

V&A Museum in London always suggest us a great range of exhibitions, and this time we have Frida Kahlo’s Wardrobe exhibition. From Mexican folk skirts to hand-decorated medical corsets, you will engage in Frida style and view her life through her wardrobe choices…

July

Morocco, Marrakech – National Festival of Marrakech Popular Arts

1 July – 31 July, 2018

This event you need to visit at least once in your life. During the whole month of July, you will be involved in a festive atmosphere in the city of Marrakesh, full of folk music concerts and parades, and other popular arts activities.

August

Edinburgh, Scotland – Edinburgh Festival Fringe

3 August – 27 August

During the whole months, Edinburgh will be full of joy, like art exhibitions, concerts, creative art street activities. And everyone can apply for this festival, so take your chance!

September

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – ArtRio ’18

14 September – 17 September

Rio always been a significant part of the world art stage, so here its best art exhibition to date. This is the eighth edition of The Rio de Janeiro International Art Fair at Marina da Glória, and represents a part of the top art exhibitions of Latin America that will also be held in other countries.

New York, USA – Into the Veil: An After Dark Exploration

On the most creepy months, the best way is to celebrate Halloween in a different way. You will visit a mysterious cemetery, with beautiful gardens and houses. You will enjoy different art activities, storytelling and live theatre during the Friday 13!

November

Barcelona Art Events – Guided Tours of Casa Bloc

2 June – November (available through 2019)

Art=Barcelona, and Barcelona=art. This time, you have the opportunity to observe the extraordinary and innovative (for its time) architecture of the Catalan heritage Casa Bloc organized by the city’s design museum, Museu del Disseny de Barcelona. This house was built during the Second Spanish Republic in Barcelona, where architects were willing to create something for excellent cohabitation of the community.

December

Lyon, France – The Contemporary Art Biennial Lyon

September-December (to be confirmed)

Finish your art year 2018 in one of its centres – France. The Contemporary Art Biennial Lyon is located in three separate platforms and consists of different art exhibitions, a cultural laboratory, and artists’ residencies. More than 500 artists will be presented on the Biennial.
